It turns out, maybe you don’t need a car so much…

When Jack moved to Fort Collins, CO for his partner to go back to school, he left his beloved 1975 Volkwagen Westfalia behind in Santa Cruz, CA for safe keeping in the warm California sun. Curious about trying to live a predominantly car-free lifestyle, he started commuting, grocery shopping, going to the climbing gym, even carrying rolls of fabric to the lab, all from his bike.

It wasn’t until he was mostly through the Colorado winter that he realized that biking was not only viable, but was often the best part of his day. Due to an obsession with making things himself, he designed and built multiple iterations of bike bags to carry his belongings around town and they became essential.

And so was birthed the philosophy that if we can make it easier and more fun to get out on your bike, hopefully more people will realize that maybe you don’t need to drive your car so much.

Meet the Team

Here’s the team of engineers, designers and business folks are making your bags:

  • Founder & Head of Product Design

Biking, climbing, surfing, skiing - Jack loves it all. He started Wompy to help convince people to bike more and drive less and he believes that we can do that by making it easier and more fun to get on your bike.

  • Business Advisor

With a history of product design consulting, an MBA and a number of his own product launches under his belt, Cameron lends his business smarts to the team. When he's not mentoring students at UCSD, you can catching play with his kids or out surfing.

  • Technical Advisor

Jake is the epitome of an engineer; perpetually building, perpetually tinkering. He's got a serious Craigslist bike buying problem, but we think there are worse problems to have.

  • Sustainability Advisor

With Imbact MBA from Colorado State University, Lauren helps make sure that our business is run with the environment as a primary stakeholder. If she's not out backpacking in the Sierra, she's probably romping around town on her trusty steed "Bicycle Jackson"

Why Wompy?

Wompy is a nickname given to Wompatuck Park, the place that Jack grew up mountain biking as a kid, in a town just south of Boston. Though it was once hid a munitions depot during WWII, it is now overgrown with mountain biking and hiking trails, ripe for adventures.

It marked his first experiences going out with friends and exploring the outdoors, and serves as a reminder that adventure can start right out your front door.

It is with respect and gratitude that we borrow this namesake from Josias Wampatuck, the sachem of the Mattakeesett band of Massachusett Indians.

Now get outside and do some riding!

Here’s a video of Jack, our founder, riding his bike from San Francisco to the top of Mount Shasta, California. He strapped his skis to his bike and finished the couple thousand feet of climbing on his skis.
